Women\u2019s unpaid care work has increased significantly as a result of school closures and the increased needs of older people. Women are also harder hit by the economic impacts of COVID-19, as they disproportionately work in insecure labour markets. Nearly 60 per cent of women work in the informal economy, which puts them at greater risk of falling into poverty.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #222222;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">The pandemic has also led to a steep increase in\u00a0violence against women and girls.\u00a0With lockdown measures in place,\u00a0many women are trapped at home with their abusers, struggling to access services that are suffering from cuts and restrictions. Emerging data shows that, since the outbreak of the pandemic, violence against women and girls \u2013 and particularly domestic violence \u2013 has intensified.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #222222;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">Facts and Figures<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\r\n \t<li><span style=\"color: #222222;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">With only seven years remaining, a mere 15.4 per cent of Goal 5 indicators with data are \u201con track\u201d, 61.5 per cent are at a moderate distance and 23.1 per cent are far or very far off track from 2030 targets.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li><span style=\"color: #222222;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">In many areas, progress has been too slow. At the current rate, it will take an estimated 300 years to end child marriage, 286 years to close gaps in legal protection and remove discriminatory laws, 140 years for women to be represented equally in positions of power and leadership in the workplace, and 47 years to achieve equal representation in national parliaments.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li><span style=\"color: #222222;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">Political leadership, investments and comprehensive policy reforms are needed to dismantle systemic barriers to achieving Goal 5. Gender equality is a cross-cutting objective and must be a key focus of national policies, budgets and institutions.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li><span style=\"color: #222222;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">Around 2.4 billion women of working age are not afforded equal economic opportunity.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldbank.org\/en\/news\/press-release\/2022\/03\/01\/nearly-2-4-billion-women-globally-don-t-have-same-economic-rights-as-men\">Nearly 2.4 Billion Women style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">178 countries maintain legal barriers that prevent women\u2019s full economic participation.\u00a0<a
