It is disrupting national economies and affecting lives. Weather patterns are changing, sea levels are rising, and weather events are becoming more extreme.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #222222;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">Although greenhouse gas emissions are projected to drop about 6 per cent in 2020 due to travel bans and economic slowdowns resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic, this improvement is only temporary.\u00a0Climate change is not on pause.\u00a0Once the global economy begins to recover from the pandemic, emissions are expected to return to higher levels.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #222222;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">Saving lives and livelihoods requires urgent action to address both the pandemic and the climate emergency.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #222222;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">The\u00a0Paris Agreement, adopted in 2015,\u00a0aims to strengthen the global response to the threat of climate change by keeping a global temperature rise this century well below 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. The agreement also aims to strengthen the ability of countries to deal with the impacts of climate change, through appropriate financial flows, a new technology framework and an enhanced capacity building framework.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #222222;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">Facts and Figures <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\r\n \t<li><span style=\"color: #222222;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">With a climate cataclysm looming, the pace and scale of current climate action plans are wholly insufficient to effectively tackle climate change. Increasingly frequent and intense extreme weather events are already impacting every region on Earth. Rising temperatures will escalate these hazards further, posing grave risks.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li><span style=\"color: #222222;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) emphasizes that deep, rapid and sustained reductions in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are essential in all sectors, beginning now and continuing throughout this decade. To limit global warming to 1.5\u00b0C above pre- industrial levels, emissions must already be decreasing and need to be cut by almost half by 2030, just seven years away.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li><span style=\"color: #222222;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">Urgent and transformative action is crucial, going beyond mere plans and promises. It requires raising ambition, covering entire economies and moving towards climate-resilient development, while outlining a clear path to achieve net-zero emissions.
