The Municipality of Thessaloniki and the Tourism Department of the Directorate of Culture are organizing the “2nd Cooking Utensil and Used Cooking Oil Recycling Festival”, an environmentally friendly event that will take place as part of World Sustainable Gastronomy Day. The event is scheduled for June 18th at the City Hall, from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM.
The Municipality of Thessaloniki invites citizens and professionals to refresh their kitchens by recycling their old pots, pans, and utensils (plastic, metal), as well as their used cooking oil. This initiative aims to help create the sustainable city we envision. By recycling used cooking oil, we contribute to a 90% reduction in CO2 greenhouse gas emissions, prevent blocked drains, assist wastewater treatment plants (thus saving money), and benefit the environment.
From 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM, residents can bring their old and worn cooking utensils. These will be placed on a large green “G” (the Municipality of Thessaloniki’s logo for its inclusion in the UNESCO Creative Cities Network) and subsequently collected by the Directorate of Recycling and Circular Economy Systems Development for recycling. Used cooking oil (in 1.5-liter plastic bottles) will be placed in special bins provided by the company “Prasino Ladi” (Green Oil) and forwarded for biodiesel production. Upon handing in a utensil or used cooking oil, Thessaloniki residents will receive a potted plant.
Together, on June 18th, we will “cook up” a better tomorrow for everyone! Our active participation will breathe new life into the environment where we live and raise our children. The event is aligned with UNESCO’s initiatives.
The event is supported by the Solid Waste Management Authority of Central Macedonia (FoDSA Central Macedonia), “Prasino Ladi” company, and “Agris S.A.” Seeds company.
